The red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is probably the most commonly kept reptile in the world.  The are mainly found in Florida and are also comonly known as Florida Turtles.  These are aquatic turtles and are mainly found in rivers and fresh water ponds.

Red eared sliders are easy to maintain and care for however time
is needed in providing them with a suitable eviroment in which they can
live in.  They need to have a large enough tank that they can grow.  The
water must be deep enough that they can turn over in case they some
how end up upside down.

These fresh water turtles spend much of their time in the warm waters of their native habitat. While they are strong underwater swimmers, these sliders spend much of the warmer hours of the day hauled out on logs or rocks (or, when very small, on marsh weeds and other aquatic plants) basking in the sun. All of the sliders are omnivores, eating both animal protein and vegetable/plant matter. Younger turtles need up to 40% of their food from protein sources; adult turtles feed more heavily on vegetation. In the wild they begin by eating tiny fish and amphibian larva, water snails and a variety of plants growing in the water and on land.

Red eared sliders make excellent pets and can be watched for hours.  I reccommend to anyone who wants any turtles that you should get some red eared sliders.  They are wonder pets and are easy to maintain.  They make a good beginner turtle, however you need to be aware that they can grow quite big  very quickly and therefore may need a large area in which they may be accomodated.  This may be expensive and may require a lot of attention.  If you do have a turtle and it grows to big for you to handle do not release it.  There are places that you can send it where it can be relocated and have a nice new home.
